During a Suspension of Standing Orders to Monday's Wicklow County Council meeting, Cllr. Joe Behan expressed his concerns over the closure of the Local Studies Section of Ballywaltrim Library.

The Local Studies Section is regularly used for research purposes by a number of Wicklow individuals, groups and organisations, including various historical societies.

Cllr. Behan had also mentioned at the first meeting of the newly elected council held last month that the 'Library Service has been cut to shreds.'

Speaking on Monday, he said, 'a person has retired in Greystones library and now the person who would normally man the Local Studies Section in Ballywaltrim Library has been moved to Greystones. I would like to express my own concerns and support the people have been very badly let down by closing down the Local Studies Area.'

Cllr. Derek Mitchell noted that Greystones Library now shuts on a Friday.

Wicklow County Council Chief Executive, Eddie Sheehy, said a submission has been made to the Department which is being examined at the moment.

He advised, 'the filling of the vacancy has to be approved by the Department before we can proceed.'

Cllr. Behan suggested contacting Wicklow's local TDs for their support as the 'decision appears to be a national one.'
