A NEW boxing club will be built in Bray after the Department of Tourism and Sport announced €190,000 in funding for the town.

Al Morris of Ballywaltrim Boxing Club said that it is understood the new facility will be on Schools Road, adjacent to Bray Wheelers Clubhouse.

'It's great for the town and great for boxing,' said Al, adding that this came about through the success of Olympic gold medallist Katie Taylor.

'It's great for Pete (Taylor – of Bray Boxing Club) and his boxers. They will have proper facilities so they will perform better and can be trained better,' said Al.

He said that the new facility will include better changing rooms for men and women, an office, kitchen, large physical training area and a full size ring.

'Athletes will have access seven days a week if they need it.'

Katie and the other boxers at Bray boxing club had just this year received improvements to their clubhouse at Bray Harbour. Prior to that, both the adults and children training there had to use the toilets at the nearby Harbour Bar.

The new building will cater for both local clubs. ' This will be a dedicated place for kids and older boxers to train,' said Al.

Work on the club is expected to start in 2013. The funding for Bray is part of a 26 million package for sports clubs across Ireland.
