Youngsters plant fruit orchard
An orchard was planted last week by young people across Bray.
The First Youth Orchard in Ireland was planted with Irish heritage fruit trees by 30 young people aged from five to 14 from the afterschool club at the Little Bray Community Centre, Fassaroe.
The idea for the orchard came from a small committee set up by some of the older club members. The young people had been given the opportunity to come up with ideas for a project which a placement Masters student from NUI Maynooth studying 'Community and Youth Work'.
The members of the afterschool club contacted nonprofit making Seedsavers in Clare who have the largest selection of heritage fruit trees in Ireland.
The individual trees they planted are two years old and may bear fruit next year for the young people. The trees are being funded through sponsorship and while many trees have been sponsored more are needed.
