Kiltegan's Helen wins top €1,000 art prize

Helen Blake from Kiltegan scooped a cheque for €1,000 at the Mermaid Arts Centre Open Submission Exhibition.

The exhibition which just resumed after a five year hiatus invited submissions from artists who are living in, working in or originally from County Wicklow.

The works include all two dimensional and three dimensional pieces, craft, video and audio entries.

Helen won the prize for her oil on canvas painting, Tiny Scream. Runners up include Bernadette Murphy from Bray with her hand woven tapestry, Along the Silk Road, and Joanna Kidney's 'Sing yourself to where the singing comes from, 2011-2013, a wall based assemblage. Both receive prizes of €250.

The winners were chosen by Patrick T. Murphy, Director of the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin and the prizes were presented by Dr. John McManus, chairperson of Mermaid Arts Centre.
