Musical treat for opera lovers in Kilruddery

Published 28/08/2013 | 05:22

Soprano Regina Nathan sings ‘The Meeting of the Waters’ by Thomas Moore at the Wicklow in Song concert in the Orangerie, Kilruddery, as part of the Gathering.

Wicklow's plentiful store of song was dipped in to at Killruddery last Friday night.

The elegant orangery was the setting for an opera recital featuring Moore's Irish Melodies with soprano Regina Nathan and harpist Anne Marie O'Farrell.

Wicklow Hospice and Bray Cancer Support Centre were both supported by profits from the evening of music.

This was one of County Wicklow's many gathering events for 2013; indeed the enchanting Vale of Avoca in County Wicklow was the inspiration for much of Moore's work. As well as Moore's Melodies, the programme spanned three centuries of musical creativity and included the songs of Charles Stewart Parnell and music by Irish composer and Enniskerry native Ina Boyle.

Traditional pieces, the Miners of Wicklow jig, the Wicklow Hornpipe and The Wicklow Mountains Jig reflect Wicklow's mining and traditional music heritage.
