NORTH East Runners and Harp AC will host the Alec Fennell 5km road race on June 28th at the Old Newry Road cul-de-sac.
This will be the ninth running of the event to honour the NER club founder who passed away at a young age through illness in 2005.
This will be the first time the event will be staged on the road as previous editions took place in the Furry Glen on the Carrick Road, which is no longer in use.
NER is indebted to Cullen Auto Parts on the Coes Road and Country Fresh who have agreed to sponsor the event, which only costs €5 to enter, with all proceeds going to Cancer charities.
Registration can be made through the club's facebook page or on registration day in the Lisdoo this Saturday from 11.30am to 1pm in the bar. Race number collection details will be advised later. Registration can also be made on the day if places are still available, but note there is a limit of 200.
There will also be children's races over 300m beginning at 7pm, with the main event at 7.30. There will be two juvenile races - up to 11 and 12 and over.
The Green 5km took place on Saturday last and attracted 115 competitors. Brian McCloskey led NER home in second place in a time of 16:24. Stephen Mulholland was fourth in 16:47. The ladies race saw Denise Murphy in fourth place with Karen McCrystal fifth.
Among the many huge improvements in personal best times were Ciaran Gorman in 11th place in a great time of 18:55, with Melanie Hearty running three minutes quicker than last year.
Club fees of only €25 per year can be paid to Michael Jordan or Jim Gonnelly. Only registered athletes count on the club team in road races and in the upcoming Louth Track Championships.
Details of upcoming events are available at training sessions which take place on Tuesday evenings at 6.15 at St Helena's Bandstand for beginners and at 7pm for seasoned athletes. Thursdays at the same venue at 6.30pm is a perfect session for all.
