While the weather was far from hot the scoring for the opening 12-hole singles stableford was scorching.
Joe Hazzard (11) was the early clubhouse leaders with 30 points and was soon joined on that mark by Shane O'Neill (9). The in-form Paddy Malone (8) crept into the lead with 31 points, but was headed by Ronnie Clarke (17) - sporting his new wet bottoms.
A level-par round from Benny Tierney (8) gave him the edge on the countback over Ronnie and he was looking all over the winner until Andrew Brodigan (9) - aided by an eagle at the third hole - finished with a winning total of 33 points. Next weekend will be a 12-hole stableford competition.
The draft draws for the 2013 GUI competitions sees the club heading to new territory as Clones, Enniskillen, Farnham Estate, Carnalea and Faughan Valley are the venues selected for the club to play in the various competitions.
The work on the three new finishing holes is looking superb, with the old 18th overhauled and reshaped into a receptive 190yard Par 3 that will now be the new 16th hole, with two par 5s to follow on 17 and 18 which increases the par of the course to 70. Easter weekend is the scheduled opening of the new holes.
All information - including photographs, membership information and club notes - will be featured on the new club website that will be launched in a fortnight's time.
The Captains Dinner will take place in the clubhouse on Saturday January 26th, with the agm at 4pm the next day.
