Never associated as being a fast finisher Benny Tierney very nearly dispelled that notion as he just came up a point short of catching Paddy Malone for the individual Winter League title.
Paddy had overtaken close associate James Coburn the previous week to be the new leader and with his buddy missing because of work commitments Paddy looked a shoe in to be the winner. But for the first time in the eight weeks of this 12 hole competition the 30 point barrier was bettered by one by Benny (5) who was 2 under for his round.
Paul Kelly (5) was second with 27 with Peter Byrne (8) beating Sean Campbell and Joe Hazzard into third spot on the countback all finishing with 25 points.
The last day flourish from the top two proved decisive in the overall standings as they displaced two players James Coburn and Nial Smyth from the podium finish. Paddy Malone 161 Benny Tierney 160 Paul Kelly 158 was the top three prizewinners.
On the team front Shane Grant, Nial Smyth, Ciaran Dunne and Eddie Hill were the winners with 308 pts. ahead of Paul Kelly, Mark Hughes, Anthony Boden and Peter Smyth. The competition proved to be a great success with a total of 22 different players winning Vouchers from competition sponsors Mulkerns Eurostar Ltd 51A Forkhill Road, Newry
Over the festive season there were two competitions played. On St Stephens Day a 38 point salvo from Declkan O Neill was key to bringing home one of his partners, brother in law Benny Tierney into the winners enclosure and Declan also brought a second of his three partners Paul Owens home in second place in the novel fourball competition.
The Captains Annual charity competition for the local Mullaghbawn HUGS Group was won in emphatic style by Shane O Neill (11) who had 39 pts for the 15 holes relegation Andrew Brodigan (12) into second spot on 36 pts with James Coburn (14) emerging third from the group of Martin Traynor (15),Shane Muckian (15), Seamus McCoy (16) and Paddy Malone (10) after they all finished with 34 pts.
Sunday's 14-hole Single Stableford: 1st Colm Coburn 32pts; 2nd Paul Coburn 31 pts; 3rd Stephen Markey 28 pts.
