The Byrne McNuly Shield was held in Greenore recently in memory of the laste Kevin Byrne and Gerry McNulty. This year's competrition was played on one of the better days of this bleak summer, with lots of sunshine, although the windy conditions made life tough.
As ususal the competition was fierce, which was refelected in the scores as eight players finished with two points of the winner, Jimmy Mallons, who finally landed the coveted Shield title after many years of trying.
Jimmy saw off his good friend and holder Eamonn Hollywood and was presented with the Shield by event organiser Eddie Norton.
The Winter League individual and team based competitions got off to a terrific start with huge numbers playing in the opening week. There are weekly Christmas hamper prizes for first, second and third and the same at the end (8 weeks) for the team prizes. There will be two weeks of competition played before teams of four will be formulated with the best two out of four scores to count in the team event each week. The 12-hole competition has seen members handicaps decimated by the computer, with the highest handicap on offer 12 right down to 1.
Playing off 5 did not deter Paul Kelly who got the league off to a flyer with a return of 28 points over the shortened Winter course. Paul became the first Christmas Hamper winner with Conor McGivern (8) two points behind in second spot with Frank Ryan (8) third on 24 one better than Raymond Flynn (7), Jamie Duffy (7), Raymond Kelly (5), Conor Walker (6), Pearse Murphy (8) and James Coburn (8).Members can play any day during the course of the week Mon to Sun but their card must be marked by a Winter League player. All outstanding prize vouchers are left behind the bar for the winners to collect at their convenience.
The Seniors on Thursday saw Jim McDonnell and Frank Ryan both finish with 28 points for the 12 holes with the evergreen Noel Williams next two points adrift. Play for the Seniors will continue this Thursday.
Development work has already commenced on the course with the plans for the new holes to be revealed later this month

Captain Nigel Giff will be hosting a end of year prize giving and social night on Saturday 24th November in the clubhouse. Mickey Gartlan will be hosting his Killin Golf Society Captains Prize in Killin this Saturday 10 November. Tee Times from 10am-12pm only, entry sheet is posted on the noticeboard. The bank holiday witnessed the conclusion of the 2012 Ryder Cup in Killin. The Town team took a very strong advantage of 8.5
points to 3.5 points into the second round foursomes matches and they then extended their lead after the second round by a further 3 points. The Country boys needed a miracle in the final day singles matches and it simply did not come.The final round finished all square on 12 points each leaving the total results after three rounds at Town Team 29 points, Country Team 21 points. Stand in Country Captain Peter Bannon graciously accepted the runner-up prize and the wooden spoon that accompanies it. The Town Captain Willie McKeever then received the prestigious Killin Ryder Cup and celebrated with his teammates at the expense of his country rivals.
Many thanks have to be extended to the organisers Dickie Newell and Eamonn Keenan for running a fantastic competition over the three days which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
New members Noel Brady (22) and Eamonn O'Neill (18) won the Bank Holiday Open Scramble with 62 nett. In second place was incoming vice-captain Andy Coffey (16) and Liam O'Reilly (7) with 63.25 nett.
Louise Hanratty (9) signed for a superb 31 pts in the Ladies Winter League 13-hole competition last Wednesday, working her way through the first nine holes at level par. Angela Gartlan (23) was second with 29pts.
The incoming Lady Vice-Captain next yea will be announced at the Annual General Meeting, which will be held in the clubrooms on Monday 19th November at 7.30pm. Nomination forms for the Management Committee 2013 are available in the clubhouse from 1st of November and close on the 15th.
Jim Byrne (28) won the Midweek Open with 36pts.
Captain Shane Corr won week three of the Winter League. He and playing partner Frank Kelly burned up the course with 42pts to take first and second, while Trevor Dardis (15) was third with 39pts.
There is quite a buzz around the clubhouse about the upcoming Race Night on Friday 9th November at 8pm - everyone is welcome. There is still time to buy a racehorse just contact Finbar at 042-9663308. If you have a race sheet please return it to the clubhouse asap.
The Toolbox outing was held in Ardee where the course stood up well to heavy underfoot conditions. Joe Whelan took the honours ahead of Frank Doherty and Brendan Kelly in second and third respectively.
Pat Grey was category one winner ahead of Ollie McGorman, while Michael McKeown pipped Jeff Carr in category two.
Cathal Mulholland was on hand to present the prizes on behalf of the Toolbox at Peadar's that evening.
