Under-19s still in the mix for league triumph
A LATE Sligo Rovers equaliser denied Dundalk the outright lead in the Northern Division of the Airtricity Under-19 League as the joint table-toppers shared the spoils on Sunday afternoon.
Martin Connolly's team enjoyed a dream start at Sligo IT when a move involving Cianan Reilly and John McKeown ended with Ciaran O'Connor finishing to the net after barely a minute of play.
But the young Lilywhites rode their luck for a spell after that and it was no surprise when the Bit O'Red levelled mid-way through the half, taking advantage of an error by Josh Connell.
Sligo were dominant at that stage, but Dundalk's defence held firm until the interval and after the break it was a different story as the away side took control.
They got their reward on 65 minutes when McKeown was fouled just outside the penalty area and he dusted himself down before curling the resulting free kick round the wall and into the Sligo net.
The scorer then hit the post with another free kick and Kevin Loughran also went close to grabbing the lead goal as Dundalk continued to press, but there was a sucker punch in store for the Lilywhites.
Just five minutes remained when the home side won a free kick out on the left, and Dundalk dealt poorly with the resulting delivery as Sligo snatched a precious point.
The result leaves the two combatants still in pole position, but crucially Sligo have a game in hand. However, after making another long trip this coming Saturday to face Fanad United, Dundalk play host to Sligo in the return fixture at Oriel Park the following weekend. DUNDALK: Luke McMahon, Sammy Osobe, Fergal Mahon, Josh Connell, Roy Kierans, Kevin Loughran, Glen Farrell, John McKeown, Ciaran O'Connor, Cian O'Reilly, Kurt Murphy (Ryan Duffy).
