Athlone side are too strong

MUIRHEVNAMOR without several regulars made the long trip to Athlone for this Leinster Junior Cup tie on Sunday afternoon and against an experienced side the tank was running low after an exhausting week of four games for some of their players, including a cup final that went to extra-time.

Not altogether surprising it was asking just too much and while the scoreline was a little flatting to the Athlone side, scoring twice in injury time in the end, the outcome was virtually decided at the break when they held a 3-1 lead.

They opened the scoring only for Jimmy Cooney to cancel it out with a cracking equaliser from a free-kick. The losers then showed a little naivety as they pushed for the next goal, only to be twice caught out with counter attacks.

They tried hard to redeem the situation in the second-half, but Melville notched a fourth goal over the hour mark, and there was no way back then for Muirhevnamor.

Muirhevnamor: David Cooney, Brian Begley (Paudie Blair), Conal Mulvenna, Shane O'Callaghan, Sean Dixon, Thomas McShane, Philip Duffy, Paul Mallon, Brendan Hughes (Conor Mulvenna), Sean Conlon (Stephen Smith), Jimmy Cooney.
