ST MARY'S College U-19 Boys Basketball team is in the throes of a great season. Beginning with an exciting game against the de la Salle, the Marist boys lost by just one basket 35-33.
Determined not to allow that to happen again, the boys worked hard at each training session, helping and encouraging each other all the way. The hard work was worthwhile as the Marist boys went on to beat Breifne College 32-29, Moyne 28-18 and St. Aidan's, Cootehill 38-28 to reach the final of the Northeast Schoolboys League.
St. Peter's, Dunboyne were the opposition to overcome in the semi-final, which was played in the Marist hall on Wednesday. This was always going to be a difficult game between two very capable and competent teams.
The Marist boys started strongly, scoring six points before St. Peter's could respond. However, Dunboyne came back at the boys and soon took the lead. Demonstrating great defensive techniques and great skill and determination, the Marist boys emerged victorious in a highly charged, fast paced game 33-31.
Admirably led by their captain, Faolan Tynan Kelleher, St. Mary's College now look forward to the Northeast Schoolboys League Final and the All-Ireland Play-offs. ST.
