Busy time for ADSC club as members complete in annual ESB Gala meet

WHAT a busy two weeks it is proving to be for our local swimming club ADSC. On Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th of November, a team of 16 swimmers from the club headed off to the Sportsco Facility in Ringsend, Dublin, for the annual ESB Gala.

ESB Swimming Club was established over 55 years ago, and this was another chance for local swimmers to participate in a well run and highly regarded Gala. Once again, the club had another first time competitor, this time Dervla Mellin, who was hoping to follow in big sister Aine's footsteps. She competed for the first time in the 50m Breaststroke, setting a time of 1:06:54. Aine managed a Personal Best in both the 100m Breaststroke and the 100m IM.

There were more PB's to follow from Conal Kelly in the 100m Breaststroke, Eamon Crawford in the 50m Freestyle and a phenomenal PB from Leah Martin in the 100m Freestyle.

While no medals were secured on the day, the standard of performances by all the ADSC swimmers was noteable, in particular from the ever-improving relay team of Ruth Clarke, Molly Smith, Rachel O'Brien and Kerry Lawless, who are edging ever closer to that first win.

On Sunday morning last, the club held its inaugural Sponsored Swimathon. This was a two hour swim, from 10am - 12pm. The swimmers had set themselves a target of swimming a combined total of 30Km in the two hours. This meant that on average each swimmer would have to swim 66 lengths each, but with a number of swimmers unable to attend, this suddenly seemed like a forlorn task.

However, the organisers underestimated the determination of the young swimmers. With a large number of parents in attendance, there was a rousing cheer when the total passed the 30Km mark, but the swimmers didn't just finish there, they went on to pass the 40Km mark. This was a fantastic achievement by all involved. The Club Committee would like to thank all the swimmers, all the parents who helped out on the day, and brought cakes and treats for the swimmers when they finished, and Aura Leisure Centre for the use of the lanes for the Swimathon. There is already talk of a 50Km swim next year!

To cap off the this busy fortnight, 16 swimmers from the club will travel to the NAC in Blanchardstown this coming Sunday, to compete in the annual NUI Maynooth Devils, Christmas Gala. This a serious Gala, but with lots of fun aspects for all the competitors. Santa Claus himself will be arriving to say hello to all the younger kids in the early morning sessions, with other fun events running throughout the day. With a new club logo, and new club gear arriving recently, it is hoped this will be a standout Gala for ADSC.
