TWO goals in injury-time saw Hunterstown cause a sensation by denying St Marys the Division 2 title and automatic promotion to the Senior league.
The Ardee side have been leading the way since the opening game of the season and looked odds on to clinch the title at neighbours Hunterstown on Sunday afternoon. However, the Marys were denied at the death which means that Intermediate champions, Geraldines, will go up as champions to complete a memorable week for the club.
It looked to be going according to plan for the visitors in the first half as a goal from Ronan Carroll had them leading by 1-7 to 0-8 at the break.
However, the Junior champions proved that they were not lining out just to make up the numbers and a Brendan Lennon goal in the third quarter helped his side to lead by 1-12 to 1-9.
The Ardee side then responded and took a grip of the game before Ronan Carroll added a second goal in the 30th minute to put his side 2-12 to 1-13 in front.
The title looked all but assured at that stage but Hunterstown were not finished and took a dramatic lead when Ryan Burns got on the end of a long delivery to finish the ball to the net. Former St Marys player, Robbie Clarke, then put the final nail in the coffin when he added another goal soon after.
