Joes just too good

WITH just a point separating the teams going into last Tuesday's clash in Tallanstown, a close contest was anticipated between St Joseph's and Glyde Rangers - it didn't pan out that way, however, as the visitors netted three first-half goals on their way to a comprehensive 12-point victory.

The home team were instantly off the mark with a Conor Sheridan point, but Joes responded straight away as Conall Smyth picked out Alan Quigley, who rolled a daisy-cutter to the bottom corner of the Glyde net.

Unperturbed, the men in blue had levelled matters by the seventh minute with a free from Kieran Sheridan and fisted point from La O'Brien, but once again the Joes hit back with a goal as Alan McKenna cleverly unsighting the keeper with a sweet finish.

Kieran Sheridan replied with a long-distance free as Glyde refused to let the goals affect their overall play, but disaster struck five minutes before the break when McKenna netted his second, and the Joe's third, goal of the night.

Glyde hit back through Gerard Carroll and Brian Duffy, but the Joes had the final say of the half as, amazingly, McKenna kicked their first point of the contest to make it 3-1 to 0-7 at the interval.

Glyde also only managed a single point in the second period, while the visitor's overall play improved significantly after the restart. McKenna and Derek Mulligan stretched their lead to five points before, crucially, Glyde missed a penalty, as Fiachra Sheridan was denied by Robbie Arthur.

In an important spell Joes added two more points through McKenna and Mulligan again and that seemed to knock the fight out of the home side.

Joes didn't let up, however, and Quigley netted his second goal of the night in the 55th minute.
