GERALDINES made it a memorable week for the club when they added the Division 2 title to their Intermediate Championship in dramatic fashion at Cluskey Park on Sunday afternoon.
The reward for the Gers is that they will be playing in the Division 1 league as well as the Senior Championship in 2014.
The Intermediate champions went into Sunday's game needing to win and hope that St Marys would slip against Hunterstown at the same time. Hunterstown left it late to beat the Ardee men and it wasn't plain sailing for the Gers as they were made to fight all the way by their neighbours. In the end it they held on to win by just a point but it was enough to spark another night of celebration at McGeough Park.
The Geraldines looked to be on their way to a comfortable win when goals from Michael Rogers and Glen Trainor between the 6th and 12 minutes had them leading by 2-6 to 0-5 at the break.
However, the Joes were determined not to give their rivals anything easy and they fought back well in the second half.
Six unanswered points afte the restart reduced the gap to one and had the Gers under pressure. However, the visitors made the decisive move with a goal from Jim McEneaney and points from Michael Rogers, Dara Hamill and Kevin Pepper to lead by 3-10 to 0-12 with five minutes remaining.
A Peter Mulligan goal was followed by a Conall O'Hanlon goal to reduce the gap to three before Hamill fired over what proved to be the winner. Robert Samson hit the net but despite a nervous minute of play, the Gers held out for victory.
