Shock at N.I Secretary's Brexit comments
Louth TD Declan Breathnach highlighted 'alarming' comments made by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland James Brokenshire where he stated there would be 'no special status' for Northern Ireland during the Brexit negotiations.
Deputy Breathnach, who is also the Fianna Fail spokesperson on North - South Bodies said: 'I was shocked to learn of the comments made by Mr Brokenshire, where he specifically stated that there would be 'no special status' assigned to Northern Ireland during the Brexit negotiations. This is a ridiculous position and will only serve to frustrate the people of Northern Ireland,' said the Louth TD.
'The point has been made repeatedly that the unique circumstances in Northern Ireland, along with the fact that the region voted strongly to remain within the European Union, means that there does need to be special arrangements put in place. 'It's vital that Northern Ireland is given special status in the Brexit negotiations considering its recent social, political and economic history. Failure to assign special status could lead to the introduction of a hard border which would cause tremendous economic and social upheaval in border communities.'
