FERGUS O'Dowd has been dropped from his role as Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources and Environment, Community & Local Govt.

He had held responsibility for the NewEra Project since March 2011.

A teacher before entering politics, O'Dowd was elected to Seanad on the Administrative Panel in 1997. He was first elected to Dáil Éireann at the 2002 general election, on his fourth attempt.

Speaking after the news of his axing, Deputy O'Dwod said it had been a great pleasure to serve as a Minister in this Government, where he had been sponsible for formulating and passing much legislation that will shape the way we live in the future.

He added: 'I will continue my main priority of creating jobs in the region, and following my latest series of meetings with the IDA and Enterprise Ireland, I believe that there will be more jobs announcements for the Drogheda area in the near future. I will continue to fight on behalf of the disadvantaged, something that has been the hallmark of my political career.'
