'Naive' driver filled up with cheap fuel
FINED €2,500 FOR USING MARKED DIESEL
A POLISH driver who claimed he filled up with 'cheap diesel' in the North has been fined for having marked mineral oil in his fuel tank.
Mariusz Chmura, whose address was given as 10 Woodville Avenue, Dundalk, was stopped at Faughart on August 21 2011 as part of a joint Customs and Garda checkpoint. The fuel tank of his van was dipped and was found to have marked diesel in it.
Chmura, who has no previous convictions, had seen 'cheap diesel' for sale on the side of the road in the North, his solicitor said, and had 'naively decided' to fill up.
The solicitor said Chmura 'now realises his mistake and will be less naive in future'.
Judge Flann Brennan imposed a fine of €2,500 for having oil on which the appropriate rate was not paid.
