THE newly-formed Dundalk Lithuanian Community will host their first public event, a 'Kaziukas Fair' in the coming weeks.

The fair is a traditional Lithuanian event where all sorts of different craftsmen represent their arts and crafts, old and new manufacturing processes, jewellery, cooking traditional Lithuanian food, beverages etc.

It's a true family event, open to all, and is being organised by the Dundalk Lithuanian Community at Crowne Plaza Hotel Dundalk on March 1.

The organisers explained how the event will feature both Irish and Lithuanian artists.

'We have established communications with many Lithuanian and Irish artists and craftsmen all over Ireland, who are very keen to take part in our event.

'The fair will start at 12 noon, and will run until 7 p.m. After that we are organising a concert with participation of one of the most famous Lithuanian country-style musicians and songwriters, Virgis Stakenas,' said PRO, Egidijus Morkunas.

Dundalk Lithuanian Community is a newly-established group of Lithuanian volunteers from Dundalk who are trying to bring together the Lithuanians and those who are interested in the language, culture, traditions, history etc.

'It is our aim to organise regular and periodic meetings once in while big events of a cultural nature, where we would have an opportunity to invite guest speakers, musicians and performers from Lithuania,' added Egidijus.

'Our goal is to provide a platform for everyone to meet the Lithuanians from Louth and surrounding areas, as well as to invite the local communities to participate in our events to get acquainted with our culture, traditions, language and traditional foods.'

Egidijus added that a further aim of the group is setting up a Lithuanian Saturday school in the foreseeable future.
