Get set for 'Dundalk on Ice' this Christmas

DUNDALK IS set to rival NY's Rockerfeller Centre with the launch of the first ever ice rink at Market Square!

The 'Dundalk on Ice' programme will feature a huge rink set up in the square during the Christmas shopping season, and will be officially opened on December 7th.

Adults and children alike will have the chance to take to the rink which is set to surround the colourful fountain in the heart of the Square with a variety of events planned for the area in the coming weeks.

The Dundalk Square On Ice event is being promoted by Profile Music Group and co-ordinated locally by Dundalk Town Centre Commercial Management ( TCCM) and Dundalk Town Council.

An hour of fun filled ice skating will cost €10 for children and €12 for Adults with a special family rate of €35. The organisers are also hoping to arrange dedicated sessions for school groups at special discounted rates. SOSAD is also to benefit with five percent of ticket sales going to the charity. The official opening of Dundalk Square on Ice will take place on Friday night December 7.

It will coincide with the switching on of the Town Centre Christmas tree by Town Council Cathaoirleach Jennifer Green and will also feature a night of music and entertainment for all ages.

Dundalk Town Centre Commercial Manager Andrew Mawhinney said: 'We anticipate in excess of 15,000 people to visit Dundalk Square on Ice. This is a substantial footfall in Dundalk's town centre. We are currently working with retailers to ensure that they benefit from this additional footfall via a number of promotions and initiatives.'

'Dundalk Square on Ice could never have happened before the Market Square refurbishment and now we have a fantastic space we can offer people something new in Dundalk this Christmas.'

' Thanks to generous sponsorship from Fyffes, Specsavers, iRadio, Dundalk Bureau de Change and Matthews Coaches we will create a fantastic experience for people in Dundalk this Christmas season, offering them a fun attraction while keeping people shopping in Dundalk and supporting local business.'

Speaking on the announcement Dave Storey, Senior Executive Officer, Dundalk Town Council added: ' The refurbished Market Square is an ideal location for a seasonal ice rink. '

'Since the new look Market Square was unveiled last December it has gone on to play a central role in major events such as the Vintage Ford Rally, the Jedward concert and markets to name but a few.'
