THE Birches Alzheimer Day Care centre have launched their new look website with updated information on local services for people suffering with dementia and alzheimer's disease.

The centre is this year celebrating its 13th anniversary, and as Honorary Secretary Mary Gaughran explained, the committee opted to upgrade the website to improve ease of access to information for patients and their families.

'We are delighted to unveil the new website, which features a whole range of information not only relating to the services provided by the Birches, but also many informative articles on dementia and alzheimers,' added Mary.

She explained the history of the centre which has its roots in a family support group which first began meeting in the early 1990s.

'It was from within this group that The North Louth Branch Alzheimer's Society of Ireland was formed in 1994. Following the establishment of the branch a group of fundraisers organised a series of events which lit the torch that ensured the dream of building an Alzheimer Day Centre became a reality,' said Mary.

She explained that this energetic fundraising team raised €446,000 within two years. The day centre site, on the grounds of the Louth Hospital was donated by the HSE North East thus enabling the state of the art day centre at the birches, for people within North Louth to open on June 1 2000.

'The day centre was totally funded by the people of North Louth and their continued generosity ensures that the excellent standard of care in The Birches is maintained,' said Mary.

In a milestone for the provision of services for people living with alzheimer's and/or dementia, the Birches opened their first outreach day centre in St. James Community House, Rath Abbey, Grange, Carlingford on July 1 2013.

'This is the first time that The Birches have offered an outreach programme and it will provide a much needed service to people suffering with alzheimer's disease or dementia and their families in North Louth,' said Mary.

'Now people from Cooley, Carlingford and Omeath areas will be able to attend each Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m at this new service which is a great support for families in the area and will be a welcome club in which people diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease/Dementia can feel safe, secure and enjoy many social activities,' she added.

The new website was designed by Niall Carroll from Aquaweb.

For full information on the range of services provided, check out the new look website on www.thebirches.ie or contact the centre at (042) 9351388.
