OVER 600,000 branded cigarettes and 11,000 litres of alcohol were seized in a Revenue and Customs operation outside Ardee last week.
Officers from the Revenue's Customs Service raided a premises in Rathgory, and seized approximately 600,000 cigarettes and 11,000 litres of alcohol as part of a joint operation with An Garda Síochána.
The Customs officers uncovered 11 IBCs (Intermediate Bulk Containers) of pure alcohol along with pumps and filtration equipment at a commercial shed in the rural area.
The alcohol has a potential loss to the exchequer of approximately €416,000.
The 600,000 'Brendal' brand cigarettes have a retail value of €282,000 and a potential loss to the exchequer of €211,000.
A garda spokesman confirmed that investigations following the seizure are 'ongoing.'
Meanwhile, the Revenue and Customs Service have appealed to any businesses or members of the public to come forward if they have any information regarding the smuggling or sale of illegal cigarettes.
