IT'S 25 YEARS since the parish's Padre Pio prayer group started and a Triduum to celebrate the anniversary will take place from Monday to Wednesday, December 3 to 5.
Mass will be celebrated each night at 7.30 p.m. followed by the blessing of Padre Pio's relict. The Rosary will also be recited before each Mass in Saint Oliver Plunkett Church.
This will be an Anointing of the Sick ceremony on the Tuesday night and Benediction will be incorporated in the ceremonies on the closing night.
The group was the brainchild of local man Gerry Rogers who, with his wife Brenda, continues to be the driving force behind it.
Gerry was moved on returning from a trip to San Giovanni to approach then curate Father Christy Mohan with the idea of forming a Prayer Group dedicated to Padre Pio.
Father Mohan was totally receptive, taking the view that if it only brought two of three people to pray it would be worthwhile.
A monthly Mass on the first Monday of each month was inaugurated in Saint Oliver Plunkett Church which was celebrated by Father Mohan, who subsequently sadly passed away quite young. His successors continued the practice of the celebration of the monthly Mass, and the current celebrant is Parish Priest Father Padraig Keenan and attracts a congregation of between 25 and 50.
The monthly ceremony incorporates the Rosary beforehand, and is open to everybody to attend. There is no requirement to join the Group.
The December monthly Mass is offered for deceased members, with Father Mohan specially remembered.
