SCOIL Mhuire gan Smál, Kilkerley raised their fourth Green Flag at a ceremony in the school. The theme of this flag was 'Travel', so it was fitting that Fr. Gerry Campbell, who has travelled the world, should have been given the honour of raising this flag.
Pupils, teachers, parents, Fr. Gerry and Sorcha Brophy attended the flag raising ceremony and while the weather proved to be a little spoiler it did not deter the pupils from enjoying the strawberries and ice cream afterwards!
The pupils from Scoil Mhuire gan Smál, have been working on the travel theme for the last two years.
The Green-schools committee have been very busy coming up with ideas for promoting the travel and transport theme throughout the school.
Tara and Lucy Litchfield composed the winning slogan in the slogan competitionThe committee organised action weeks, poster competitions, WOW days, SOW days.
Every Wednesday morning the pupils, teachers and parents, park and stride from two locations - Kilkerley Emmet's car park and Kilkerley community centre car park.
On national SOW day the children brought scooters to school and classes from 1st to 6th enjoyed 'scooting' in the school grounds. 6th class had cycle training from the Cuchulainn cycling club. Projects with the travel theme were undertaken by all classes and at the travel assembly these projects were presented. Garda Frank spoke at the assembly about road safety.
Over the next two years pupils from Scoil Mhuire gan Smál, Kilkerley, will be working on the next theme, Biodiversity, and hopefully will achieve their fifth flag in 2016!
