Celebrations as Mary returns to Dundalk after 59 years
THERE WERE great celebrations in one Dundalk household over the 1982 Christmas and the New Year of 1983 when a sister, Mary McCann was welcomed home for the first time since she left Dundalk in 1924.
She was never able to afford the return ticket from New York to visit family, but just before Christmas of 1982 she won an Aer Lingus competition that offered returned tickets to Ireland for two people who had not returned to Ireland in many years.
Mary left from Liverpool docks in 1924. She made a new life in America and had married.
