Priest with local connections ordained in Philadelphia
DUNDALK can lay claim to yet another priest - Sean P English - whose dad, Paul is from Fr Murray Park - was ordained recently in Philadelphia and was joined by a large contingent of his Irish relatives for the special event.
Fr Sean, who was among six men ordained by Archbishop Charles Chaput in the Cathedral basilica of SS Peter and Paul in Philadelphia, will be allocated a parish in the state later this year.
The 28-year-old was joined for the ordination by his dad, Paul, a former chef at the Adelphi before he emigrated to the USA 34 years ago and his American-born mum Marybeth. Fr Sean is the grandson of William and Maura English, Fr Murray Park and is the eldest son of four children and has a sister Rhianna and two brothers Liam and Danny.
Also in attendance was a large group of family from Dundalk that included Paul's sisters Mary English, Ita Malocca, Kathleen Sherry and Betty English, along with Philadelphia-based sister Caroline O'Sullivan.
In addition, the ordination ceremony was shown live on the internet so that three family members who couldn't make it - Paul's siblings Liam, Bernadette and Patricia - could watch it every step of the way.
Mary told the Argus that it was a very special occasion and everyone is delighted with Fr Sean, who is the first priest in the family. Fr Sean and the rest of the Philly cousins are coming to Ireland in February next year and it is hoped that the newly-ordained priest will say Mass at St Nicholas Church in Dundalk.
