The destruction of many of Ireland's Big Houses during the War of Independence and Civil War is the subject of the Old Dundalk Society's next public lecture in the County Museum, Jocelyn Street on Wednesday April 17th at 8pm.
Dr Ciaran Reilly, a lecturer in history at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, will present a talk entitled 'The burning/destruction fo the big houses of Ireland during the War of Independence/Civil War 1919-1923'.
During this period, many of Ireland's stately homes, often referred to as 'the Big Houses' of Ireland, were maliciously burned or destroyed by having explosives placed in them.
Dr Reilly's father is from Ardee so he is well aware that among the Big Houses destroyed during this period were several in north Leinster.
Refreshments served after the lecture. Voluntary contributions at the door.
