Members of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Craobh Dhún Dealgan Under12 Group qualified to compete at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann when they came second at the recent Leinster Fleadh Cheoil. They are pictured here with the cup they won at the Louth Fleadh.

WHILE all around them were wilting in the summer heat at the Leinster Fleadh Cheoil 2013, the young musicians of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Craobh Dhún Dealgan were keeping cool heads when performing in their various competitions.

Delighted branch chairman, Austin Dawe said the event, which was held in Edenderry, Co. Offaly, was 'the most successful Leinster Fleadh for our branch in many years.

'We had competitors in the top three positions in 17 competitions achieving eight first places, three second places and six third places. We even had a first and second in one of the competitions.

'With first and second placed competitors qualifying to compete at All-Ireland level it means that Craobh Dhún Dealgan will be represented in eleven competitions when Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is staged in Derry in mid-August.'

He beleives that the success 'is due in no small way to the commitment of our branch teachers/tutors and the musicians themselves. We have been using the Oriel Centre (Dundalk Gaol) as our base for the past few years and during that time great cohesiveness and spirit has built up within the branch and I'm sure that this has had some impact on our recent impressive results.'

The successful members were:

Fionnuala Donlon – first 12-15 Harp, first 12-15 Harp Slow Airs and second in accompaniment in the 12-15 age group; Conal Duffy – first Senior Uilleann Pipes and first Senior Uilleann Pipes Slow Airs; James White – first Under 12 Piano Accordion; James White and Leona McCahill – first Under 12 Duets; Daithí Kearney – first Senior Irish Singing (male) and second Senior English Singing (male); Tadhg Mulligan – third Senior Fiddle; Donncha Hughes – first Under 12 Flute and third Under 12 Flute Slow Airs; Jessica Woodlock – second Under 12 Piano Accordion; Sárán Mulligan – third 12-15 Concertina; Áine Scott – third Under 12 Fiddle Slow Airs; Niamh Taaffe – third 12-15 Fiddle Slow Airs; Craobh Dhun Dealgan Goup, second.
