Musicians hit high note at Fleadh

Winners: James White, Sárán Mulligan, Fionnuala Donlon and Emer Callan all had success at the Leinster Fleadh in Westmeath

MANY young musicians from the Dundalk branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann will ensure that Louth will be well represented at this week's Fleadh Ceoil na hEireann in Sligo after they guaranteed their places by impressing at the recent Leinster Fleadh held in Westmeath.

The under-12 music group under the guidance of tutors Deirdre Ní Bhuachalla and Kay Webster gave a very polished performance to add the provincial title to their All-Ireland title won at last year's fleadh in Derry.

James White from Knockbridge, the current under-12 All-Ireland piano accordion champion, moved up an age group and became the 12-15 Leinster champion. Not a bad achievement at all for a musician recovering from a broken finger.

Fionnuala Donlon from Greenwood Drive guaranteed herself a busy weekend in Sligo when she won the provincial title in the 15-18 harp and accompaniment competitions and also qualified in second place in harp slow airs competition.

Emer Callan from Jenkinstown, competing in her first provincial fleadh, was awarded second place in the under-12 accompaniment competition. Sárán Mulligan from Ard Easmuinn was placed third in the concertina 12-15 competition and adjudicators recommended that Sárán should compete at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.

Sean McGrane from Cooley on piano accordion 15-18 and Jessica Woodlock from Smarmore, Ardee, on piano accordion 12-15 just missed out on qualification to Sligo when they were awarded third place in their competitions.

Enrolment for classes for the 2014/2015 season will take place in the Oriel Centre on September 8. Further details from Donna at 087-2704529.
