It's not every day that a 17-year-old schoolboy from Dundalk writes a song that features on a number one selling Irish album.
However, Keenan Copas from Avondale, along with Paul Walsh from Irish band Royseven and John Gaughan from the 'Voice of Ireland', have co-written 'Song for You', which appears on Bressie's Charity album 'Simple Things'.
The three of them met in Achill, Co. Mayo, while on a surfing holiday where they collaborated on a number of songs. 'Song for you' was picked by Bressie to feature on the album which was recorded in Windmill Lane Studios Dublin in July. Keenan wrote the melody for the song and plays acoustic guitar on the album.
He even had lunch with Matt Cardle of X-Factor fame while recording the song.
The album has reached No 1 on the iTunes Charts and went straight in at No 2 on the IRMA charts. The album features the cream of the current Irish music industry including original songs from artists such as Bressie, Heathers, the Dublin Gospel Choir, Hudson Taylor, Marty Mulligan, Orla Gartland, Ryan O'Shaughnessy, Gavin James, Danny O'Reilly, James Walsh, Ryan Sheridan, Pat Byrne, SOAK, The Original Rudeboys and, of course, our own Keenan Copas.
All the artists came together to support Cycle Against Suicide, a charity group raising awareness for the growing mental health issue plaguing the country.
Keenan is currently in his final year at the Marist College and he will be doing his Leaving Cert in 2014.
He has been writing and playing songs for a good few years and has demonstrated an extraordinary song writing talent for such a young age.
Local musician Gerry Larkin took him under his wing about two years ago and recorded Keenan's first EP in his home studio. That EP was launched in 'The Spirit Store in July 2012. Gerry is a very important mentor to Keenan and is very proud of his achievements to date. According to Gerry, the teenager 'has made an awesome start to a wonderful musical career'.
This year alone he has opened shows for Mundy, Ben Reel, Stewart Agnew, Finnian Kelleher and he will be supporting Sinead McNally in the Spirit Store on Saturday, November 30. He has also recently played the song live on the 'Colm Hayes Show' on 2FM. Keenan expects to release his next EP in early 2014.
