Omeath charity Holly's Horse Haven has received a welcome donation from fans of award-winning actor Michael Fassbender, who raised over €1,000 from his 37th birthday celebration.

Holly's founder Elaine Duffy explained that the MFO (Michael Fassbender Online) crew got in touch with the charity after reading an article about their campaign to save the mountain ponies last year.

'Michael is big into the Mustang horses in America and with his Irish connections, they wanted to help Irish horses as well,' said Elaine. 'Every year a charity benefits from donations made by fans to mark his birthday and they wanted to know if we'd be interested in receiving funds. And of course we were!'

Elaine said that money raised will go towards gelding twelve rescue horses currently with the centre, which will make it easier for them to be re-homed and freeing up critical spaces so that the charity can save another twelve horses from being put to sleep.'

'We've got 89 horses at the moment – it was 97 the week before but some went to new homes,' she said. 'We try to limit the number of horses we keep to 70 but usually end up with 90 – any more than that and we just can't cope.'

The charity takes horses and donkeys from all over the the country, taking many from pounds which would otherwise be put to sleep.

'It's heart-breaking as I had to turn away eleven horses last week. It's a dreadful decision to have to make as I know that everytime I say 'no' a horse will be shot. We can't save them all and we have to be able to look after the ones that we have.'

The cost of feeding the rescues is a major burden on the charity but Elaine pointed out that they always manage to keep going, with donations like this recent one being most welcome.

And Elaine jokes that Fassbender's star quality is brushing off on the animals in their care.

'We were asked to provide a donkey to take part in the Palm Sunday ceremonies in Newry and our donkey and two minature ponies went along.'
