Friday August 31 2007

Kerry senior footballer Paul Galvin has a reputation as a tough guy on the pitch but yesterday, at his first day in St Brendan's College Killarney, the Kerry forward showed a softer side.

The renowned player was helping to guide the 2007 crop of first-year students, many of them from small rural schools, through their first awesome day of secondary school.

One of those first-year pupils at 'the sem' included Gavin O'Shea, the son of Kerry manager Pat O'Shea.

Speaking to reporters Mr Galvin (27) said he could be "tough in the class room too -- but fair". By lunchtime none of the boys had raised the subject of football with him as they were all too busy trying to get used to their new surroundings.

The Irish and Geography teacher -- who will also teach the civics and social subjects CSPE and SPHE -- will have classes with all years.

St Brendan's rich history as a nursery for Kerry football for the past 100 years was part of attraction in the Killarney post, he said. He was aware of its history and he spoke with team mates and recent past pupils including Colm "the Gooch" Cooper, Eoin Brosnan and Seamus Moynihan before applying.

Paul Galvin was one of five new teachers yesterday at the 540 pupil mainly boys school, where the only girls are repeat Leaving Cert students.

Principal Ed O'Neill said Paul Galvin had been chosen because of his excellent teaching references. He will also help in the school's great football tradition.

"We are delighted we have him on the staff. He comes with a great reputation as a teacher.'
