Author Truman Capote, fresh from the triumph of the original non-fiction novel In Cold Blood, reputedly spent $16,000 on champagne for his legendary Black and White Ball at the sumptuous Plaza Hotel in 1966.

But as New York's Kerry contingent descended on the same landmark Manhattan hotel last week, that kind of money was, as the yanks say, peanuts.

A table for ten cost 10,000 bucks and all 142 were sold out for the mega fundraiser for Kerry GAA - that's $1,000 a plate.
