My Week: Brendan Howlin

Monday: Some people think of Monday as the first day of the week. I prefer to see this one as the first day of a new era in the Irish Labour Party, as we finally put the rancour of recent times behind us and unite in the name of whatever wishy-washy euroweenie-centrist-social-democracy it is the party stands for these days.

All it needed was a wise and responsible leader who could set ego aside and put his party and country first.

Colleagues, friends, countrymen, I am that safe pair of hands. Think of me as the Packie Bonner of Irish politics (I was advised to say that to make me sound more like a man of the people rather than a lifelong insider who's been part of the Labour establishment since my mid-20s. That was before Johnny Logan won his second Eurovision. Yes, that long ago. Everything comes to he who waits).
