Youngsters supporting an uprising are ignorant of history
A recent survey has shown that 60pc of 18- to 34-year-olds would support a popular uprising against the Government. One would have to assume, therefore, that 60pc of young people are ignorant about the historical and political sacrifice that goes in to preserving a modern liberal democracy.
Do they have no respect for men such as WT Cosgrave and Éamon de Valera, both of whom faced down the militant threat posed by the revolutionary and reactionary forces in the infancy of the Free State? When half of Europe was cascading toward fascist and communist totalitarianism, it was Messrs Cosgrave and De Valera who prevented this tiny nation from following suit.
Do they have no respect for our Constitution, a document that has facilitated and protected the democratic function of our State? Do they care that they are guaranteed the right to private property, freedom of speech and due process? Do they realise that our Constitution has embedded at its core the ability to allow for gradual evolution, through referenda and judicial review?
