You can count on voting centres
Maurice Fitzgerald (Letters, December 22) claims "counting centres have absolutely no supervision whatsoever and most of the people doing the counting are card-carrying members of political parties".
This is simply untrue and an outrageous slur on the staff who conduct election counts. All count centres are overseen by a returning officer who is supported by experienced staff and can call on the resources of the gardai to ensure the security of the process.
Your correspondent may be confused by the presence of party supporters or "tally people".
