Worst road in the country exposed

Transport Minister Noel Dempsey says he has no funds for repairing the roads damaged by the recent ice, snow and heavy rain.

The R630 (Midleton - Whitegate) road in east Cork must be one of the busiest regional roads in Ireland. Very large petroleum trucks, which carry 40pc of the nation's fuel requirements from the ConocoPhillips refinery in Whitegate, travel this road daily, not to mention a substantial amount of traffic carrying bottled gas from Calor Kosangas.

The Government receives a substantial amount of revenue through taxes and excise duties on sales of these fuels.
