Workers' deal offers protection

BRIAN Abbot says he cannot understand why some trade unions including SIPTU favour acceptance of the public service deal (Letters, April 20), despite the misery which has been inflicted on working people.
We do so because it offers the surest way of protecting jobs, pay and pensions, while providing a framework for restoring pay scales over time.
It also affords workers influence in the inevitable restructuring of our public services.
