Women's voices must finally be heard
THE decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) is to be welcomed.
As reported in your paper, Article 40.3.3 was adopted by the people of Ireland in a 1983 referendum. This article provides for the extremely difficult situation where a pregnant woman's life is gravely endangered in carrying a baby to full term.
The right to life of both the mother and the unborn child is equal. Successive governments have failed to introduce legislation, and clarification has been left to the Irish courts.
