Who to send on St Patrick's Day?

Sir -- Perhaps, in the mood of reform and change that must now be the agenda for this country, there might be a consideration of our representation abroad on St Patrick's Day.

I feel strongly that Ireland is in a privileged position in having a day where the country can be highlighted internationally, doors opened, and a positive image of the country promoted.

My suggestion is that well-known and regarded Irish people be considered to add to the representation of the country in venues abroad on St Patrick's Day. They could be accompanied by ministerial politicians and the business promotional entourage as may be. Perhaps the Taoiseach, in fairness to his position, might be the exception. Of course, we are always well represented by our President, Mary McAleese.
