Whistle blowing

• Being a lifelong lover of Gaelic football and its skills, and having just read the "eulogy" to Kerry/Tyrone football relations by columnist Billy Keane (Irish Independent, July 21), I settled down in front of my TV last Saturday, looking forward to a classic encounter -- after all he had emphasised the "love and respect" that each county had for each other, apparently.

Unfortunately, what followed was a total disgrace and an insult to viewers that took the time to tune in.

We were treated to 70 minutes of persistent fouling, late and dangerous tackling, off-the-ball cowardly striking and goading of opponents by both teams. So much for the 'love and respect'. In fact the ball seemed to be an unwelcome intrusion and distraction from the 'real' business.
