We must go back to green old days
Saturday July 25 2009
I wholly commend Stephen Duffy (Letters, July 23) for highlighting how barren Ireland's treescape is at a mere 9pc.
If we want to set ourselves up as a green technology centre, it would help to practise what we preach.
The creation of a national broadleaf forest in the heart of the country would be a good starting point and a grandiose statement of intent.
Everyone could make their mark: a place of beauty made by the people, for the people. It could be one positive step towards achieving collective goals as a nation, after a decade of wanton (and disastrous) individualism.
At the very heart of the forest could be an inspiring sculpture depicting a symbolic representation of togetherness and sustainability; a fitting gesture for a new, more equitable Ireland.
