We don't need any more roads

Anybody watching RTE's 'Nationwide' last Monday might have been forgiven for thinking they were watching a National Roads Authority (NRA) promotional video.
It uncritically celebrated rampant road construction in the west of Ireland and elsewhere and shamelessly tried to "greenwash" it all with a piece on the repair of historic stone bridges at the end.
The NRA has been building motorways and other roads up and down the country with almost complete autonomy for the last decade. Like the construction bubble, the road-building programme is a colossal environmental, societal and economic folly and should be completely halted and the NRA wound down.
