Madam – I was shocked and appalled to read your story on garda stations closing (Sunday Independent, December 23, 2012). The gardai do their very best, but they have no resources.
When Enda Kenny took office he said he would make Ireland the best little country in the world in which to grow old or raise a family. Two years later we have lost faith in him.
From Belmullet to Easkey, garda stations are to close. This is no way to fight crime.
There is a fear for the safety of the old. Even the local parish priest will not publish Sunday collections amounts.
Politicians should remember that if people don't feel safe in their own homes, they will vote them out at the next election. Do they want us to be like the UK with a police counter service in supermarkets? Stand at the till to report crime? Let's not go down that road.
