Vehicle tax is a fraud in itself

If I may be permitted to make a quick observation on the report by Treacy Hogan, 'VRT Fraud Crackdown To Focus On Luxury Car Imports' (Irish Independent, August 24), the only fraud I perceive is VRT itself.
This tax, introduced to keep state coffers filled when it was no longer permissible to charge import duty due to the opening of internal frontiers in the European Union, is widely believed to be totally illegal in EU law, and, in fact, flies against everything the EU stands for -- a common market.
The only saving grace is that assessment will be done by the NCT service -- sure those fellas wouldn't know the difference between a GTI and a JCB.
