Untouchable civil servants
Sir -- I wish to commend Eamonn Blaney for a superb article on the untouchable ruling classes of the Irish civil service (Sunday Independent, August 22, 2010).
There is a word for the form of government Ireland suffers -- a Greek word (how appropriate is that) 'kakistocracy', which means a society run by the most stupid and incompetent people.
Four times since independence Ireland has seen its best and brightest leave for countries where intelligence, hard work, creativity and initiative are actually valued and rewarded. This can hardly be a coincidence.
