Unions help all working people

Derek Gallagher said that trade unions no longer represent ordinary workers because their members are "some of the best paid employees in the country" (Letters, March 11).

If he is really concerned about helping ordinary, working people he should be urging them to join unions instead of attacking unions.

My union SIPTU is currently campaigning to protect the national minimum wage and the joint labour committees, which are the only safeguards for low-paid workers such as cleaners, restaurant and hotel workers, hairdressers and security guards.
