Unfair to attack Cabinet holidays

Published 08/08/2010 | 11:34

Sir -- The headline, 'Exodus of Ministers jetting off on holidays as tough Budget looms', on Don Lavery's piece on ministers' holiday plans (Sunday Independent, Aug. 1, 2010) was grossly unfair.

On reading the piece, we discover that only half (8 of 16) of the cabinet are discussed, and among those 8, not a single one is known for sure to be taking a holiday outside of Ireland.

The particulars: Brian Cowen -- "expected to head for . . . Connemara;'' Mary Coughlan -- "may go overseas;'' Brian Lenihan -- "spending his holidays at home;'' Noel Dempsey -- "no comment;'' Dermot Ahern -- "around for most of August;'' Micheal Martin -- "likes to spend his holidays . . . in west Cork;'' Batt O'Keeffe -- "taking time off;'' Brendan Smith -- "spending his time in Ireland.''
