One of the world's greatest writers has passed away - William Trevor, born in Cork, master of the short story.

Trevor was a professional writer who liked to keep a low profile. He was a person who would rather listen and write than talk about his work.

He wrote instinctively with material he would often acquire by listening to public banter.
